Key terms in Ghanaian politics, the NDC, electoral processes, and governance — explained simply for every student.
By-election
PoliticalAn election held to fill a parliamentary seat that has become vacant between general elections, due to the death, resignation, or disqualification of an MP.
Constituency
ElectoralA defined geographical area in Ghana represented by one Member of Parliament. Ghana has 275 constituencies, each electing one MP to Parliament.
Chapter
TEINA local branch of TEIN established at a specific tertiary institution. Each chapter has its own elected executive and operates under the TEIN Ghana national framework.
Caucus
PoliticalA group of members of a political party within a larger body (e.g., Parliament or a student council) who meet to coordinate their positions and strategies.
Civil Society
GeneralNon-governmental organisations, community groups, trade unions, and advocacy bodies that operate between the family, the state, and the market, holding governments accountable.
Civic Education
GeneralEducation focused on the rights, responsibilities, and duties of citizens in a democratic society. TEIN VVU considers civic education a core pillar of its mission.
District Assembly
GovernanceA local government body in Ghana responsible for development planning and administration at the district level. Members include elected and government-appointed representatives.
Decentralisation
GovernanceThe transfer of authority, responsibility, and resources from the central government to local government units (districts and municipalities) in Ghana.
Electoral Commission (EC)
ElectoralThe constitutionally established independent body responsible for conducting and supervising all public elections in Ghana, including presidential and parliamentary elections.
Forward Ever, Backward Never
NDCThe iconic rallying slogan of the NDC, originally popularised by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings. It represents the party's progressive and forward-looking spirit. Also the opening line of the NDC Party Anthem.
Incumbent
PoliticalThe current holder of a political office or position, who is running for re-election.
Mahama
NDCH.E. John Dramani Mahama — the 4th President of the Republic of Ghana (2012–2017) and current President of Ghana (2025–). NDC's flagbearer and a champion of youth and infrastructure development.
Manifesto
PoliticalA public declaration of a political party's intentions, policies, and plans for governance. Parties present manifestos before elections to inform voters of their agenda.
NDC
NDCNational Democratic Congress — Ghana's leading social democratic political party, founded on 24 September 1992 by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings. The party's ideology is rooted in social democracy, probity, accountability, and Pan-Africanism.
NABCO
GovernanceNation Builders Corps — a government initiative providing stipend-based work experience placements for graduates in public sector roles. Associated with the NDC job creation legacy.
NHIS
GovernanceNational Health Insurance Scheme — Ghana's public health insurance programme providing access to healthcare for all Ghanaians. A flagship NDC social welfare achievement.
Opposition
PoliticalThe political party or parties not in government. In Ghana's parliamentary system, the opposition scrutinises the government's actions and presents alternative policies.
Probity
NDCOne of the NDC's core values — the quality of having strong moral principles, complete and confirmed integrity, especially in public office. A cornerstone of the NDC's governance philosophy.
Polling Station
ElectoralA designated location where registered voters in a specific area go to cast their ballots on election day. Each constituency is divided into multiple polling stations.
Parliament
PoliticalGhana's unicameral legislature, consisting of 275 elected Members of Parliament. Responsible for making laws, approving the budget, and overseeing the executive branch.
Quorum
GeneralThe minimum number of members of a group or organisation that must be present at a meeting for it to be valid and for decisions to be made officially.
ROPAL
ElectoralRepresentation of the People (Amendment) Law — the legislation governing voter registration and electoral conduct in Ghana.
Runoff
ElectoralA second round of presidential voting held when no candidate wins more than 50% of valid votes cast in the first round. Ghana's constitution requires an absolute majority to win.
Referendum
GeneralA direct vote by the electorate on a particular proposal or question — such as a constitutional amendment — rather than through elected representatives.
Social Democracy
NDCThe NDC's ideological foundation — a political and economic philosophy that supports political democracy alongside social justice, achieved through a regulated market economy and strong state welfare systems.
TEIN
NDCTertiary Education Institutions Network — the official student wing of the National Democratic Congress, active across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Ghana.
TEIN VVU
NDCThe TEIN chapter at Valley View University, Oyibi, Accra. Responsible for political education, voter drives, community outreach, and student mobilisation at VVU.
TEIN Patron
TEINA senior NDC official (often an MP, minister, or party executive) who provides guidance, mentorship, and support to a TEIN chapter. Not an elected position.
TEIN Organizer
TEINAn elected executive position responsible for coordinating chapter activities, events, and membership mobilisation on campus.
Trust Fund
TEINThe TEIN VVU Student Trust Fund — a welfare initiative established in 2023 to provide financial support, emergency relief, and leadership development resources for members facing hardship.
Voter ID
ElectoralA biometric identification card issued by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to registered voters. Required to vote in all public elections.
Women's Commissioner
TEINAn elected executive position that advocates specifically for the interests of women within the TEIN chapter and ensures gender-inclusive participation in all activities.
